Before we get into it, yes, this is more of a butter yellow than mustard. But admittedly mustard makes for a better joke — just humor me here.
Take a scroll through my Pinterest homepage and you’ll find a common color story — rich reds, verdant greens, and warming yellows. As the food obsessed girl I am, this color combination reminds me of the three staple condiments: ketchup, mustard, and relish. In the worlds of Paulette Bonafonté (aka Jennifer Coolage), “it makes me want a hot dog real bad.”
Just as we may associate a hotdog with a summer cookout or baseball game, these brighter reds, greens, and yellows are easy choices for the warmer months. But I’m here to remind you they deserve a place in our year-round wardrobe. Don’t get me wrong, I love a good autumnal neutral to ground a bolder hue, but I’m excited by these pops of color for everything from nail polish colors, interiors, and, of course, clothing.
If you’re like me and feeling inspired to liven up your fall wardrobe, keep scrolling to see my round-up of some pieces I’ve been eyeing and how’d I’d wear them this season.
The Wishlist
Here’s a quick overview of some of the clothes and accessories I’ve saved for each of these colors. Unintentionally, each grouping could be worn as a monochrome outfit, but I’ve worked some of these pieces into additional looks in the next section.
Red:
Marni Sunglasses: I tried on these sunnies in the Retrosuperfuture store and haven’t stopped thinking about them. If you feel nervous about adding more color into your wardrobe, accessories are a great place to start!
Marge Sherwood Bag: A little purse by Marge Sherwood has been on my list for as long as I can remember. Is it the most practical size? Probably not, but certainly big enough for a phone, wallet, and chapstick, which is really all I need at the end of the day.
Elwood Corduroy Pants: Corduroy for fall isn’t a breakthrough, yet it’s somehow a fabric I haven’t had in my wardrobe for years. I love a slouchy fit to really lean into the comfort of fall.
Studio Tomboy Jacket: I stumbled upon this wool bomber jacket a few weeks ago while creating this Winnie the Pooh inspired look — it’s been on my mind ever since! It’s the perfect oversized fit and a great multi-season layering piece.
Róhe Silk Blouse: Even though Halloween hasn’t passed yet, I already have holiday parties on the mind. This slinky blouse is perfectly festive for any upcoming events, yet also great to dress down simply by adding a jacket over it.
Madewell Flats: My go-to flats now come in this chic red hue. They’re truly some of the most comfortable shoes I’ve worn… can’t recommend them enough!
Yellow:
Free People Jeans: I love a button-fly and a sculptural pair of pants, so these were a fast wishlist item. I do love the yellow option but if this color feels a little intimidating, they have a ton of other washes available!
Anni Lu Necklace: See above re: accessories being the easiest way to add a new color to your wardrobe!
Linda Farrow x Jacquemus Sunglasses: The shape on these sunnies is so good and they’d look great on a range of face shapes!
COS Tee: A sheer long-sleeve is my must-have layering piece from fall through spring. I love this merino wool option for extra warmth and a pop of color!
American Vintage Vest: This perfectly boxy vest is giving the tech-bro staple Patagonia but chicer. I’m all for a good shearling piece in the cozier months.
Marni Clogs: These are easily going to be the most controversial item in this round-up. Sure, they kind of give Big Bird, but I think they’re such a unique way to add texture to an outfit. Fashion is supposed to be fun :)
Green:
Lizzie Fortunato Earrings: The classic pearl earring with a special twist — these are the cherry on top for any look.
Call It By Your Name Tote: Not only is this bag the perfect carry-all size, it’s also super versatile. With two handle options and a reversible design, this is truly a tote you can use any day of the week.
Toteme Silk Pants: At the end of the day, I really just want to wear PJs and be comfortable. These pants are the perfect intersection of ease and polish.
Babaà Turtleneck Sweater: A Babaà sweater has been on my list for years, I love their commitment to sustainability and quality. As someone who aims to purchase natural fiber knits, Babaà is the easiest place to look.
Acne Studios Scarf: A cult favorite for a reason. If you don’t already have a great chunky scarf in your arsenal but not quite ready to shell out $$$ for the Acne option, I’ve seen some great options from COS as well.
Birkenstock 1774 Sandals: A sandal in late fall is controversial, I know. As a Los Angeles resident I’ll admit I’m spoiled by (mostly) being able to bear my toes year-round, but I think these shoes would look equally great with a slouchy wool sock.
